Integrative Naturopathic Care Emphasizes the importance of the doctor-Patient Relationship
What is Integrative Medicine and What is a Naturopathic Doctor/ Integrative physician?
Integrative medicine is “Blended Medicine”. It is called today as "the New Medicine" that combines the Wisdom of Conventional Medicine, Modern Naturopathic Medicine and Evidence-Based Alternative Therapies (CAM). “Combining the Best of both Worlds “ is now the practice of Integrative Family Health Care.
An integrative Physician is Trained in both the Conventional and the Alternative system.
The Clinical approach of our Integrative Medical Doctors involves Holistic care (Body –Soul-Spirit)the preliminary approach consist of Naturopathic Assessment and Diagnosis Techniques; It begins with an inquiry about the patient’s complete Medical History, his Diet and Lifestyle, Stress factors and Nutritional status; a comprehensive Naturopathic analysis about the Root causes of the Disease; On the other hand, following a standard medical procedure, he performs physical examination and when applicable, based on the patient's consent, will also order (e.q. an MD) Medical Diagnostic Tests to confirm his impressions ; which are also components of Integrative Medicine to accurately assess medical/health conditions.
The Primary goal is Optimum Health, not just Symptom-Free .
The primary goal of Naturopathic/Integrative Physician is to re-establish and maintain Optimal health. He will achieved this by educating and empowering his patients; nutritionally work towards detoxification and enhancement of key body systems - strengthening his patient's immune system, supporting and restoring weakened systems, and stimulating inner positive attitude and self-healing mechanism. When necessary (patient consent), drugs can be used at the minimal dosage with the immediate aim to symptom-relief/ control, to increase the patient’s level of wellness at the moment. While over time, a therapeutic management is implemented with the ultimate goal of elimination and reducing the patient's dependence on prescription medication. The Naturopathic/IM Physician will spent more time with patients so they can completely cooperate with the disease-management process, and take actual personal responsibility to their health .
Treatment Program: The “Combination Approach”
First Clinic Visit and Onward: In addition to providing recommendations on pharmaceutical drugs (in case of licensed physicians) or OTC’s (Board Certified-NMD’s) for immediate symptom-relief; Integrative Naturopathic Physicians as a Natural health professionals, will prescribed lifestyle changes, therapeutic diets , exercise program, Stress Management techniques, Nutritional supplements, botanical medicines and other Evidenced-Based Naturopathic therapies as needed in a particular disease.Naturopathic care and therapeutic management consists of utilizing natural substances to control symptoms, and that specifically target the Disease.
Primary Health Care Provider Rolled into One
Because of the nature of his holistic training, an Integrative Physician is seen as health care provider “rolled into one”. Clinical psychologist, Clinical Nutritionist, lifestyle-Counselor, Educator, herbalist and Medical doctor. He spends a great deal of time with his patients (ranging from 45 minutes to 1 hour or two hours), both for health assessment and treatment approach, and a great deal of follow up in relation to the recommended therapeutic program.
Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine
1- First, Do No Harm (Primum non nocere)
Naturopathic physicians choose the most non-invasive and least toxic treatments necessary for each patient.
2- The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae)
Naturopathic doctors recognize the body’s inherent ability to heal itself.
3- Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam)
Naturopathic doctors identify, address and remove the underlying causes of disease.
4- Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
Educating and supporting patients on personal health management is an important role for naturopathic doctors. They empower patients to take responsibility for their own health. They also acknowledge the therapeutic value inherent in the doctor-patient relationship.
5- Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum)
This is a holistic concept that recognizes the body as an integrated whole. Naturopathic doctors treat the patient, not the disease. A naturopathic assessment addresses the nutritional status, lifestyle, family history, physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors in a person’s life.
6- Prevention (Praevenic)
Naturopathic doctors promote a focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
